Cora Gives Back to Animals!

Cora is a definite animal lover! That is why she celebrated her birthday party at HSHV. She loves animals so much that she wanted to help them out in some way. So the money she got from her birthday party was donated to the animals at the shelter. We hope you know how much the animals appreciate your kind donation. You have helped to make sure they all continue to stay safe, happy and healthy while they await their forever homes. Thank you again so much for celebrating with us and for sharing your love and compassion for all animals, Cora!

One year ago today

One year ago today, I adopted Finnegan. He has done more than a few tours through the shelter. Finnegan has been the light of my life bringing smiles and laughter every day. He has been to three training classes and was always top of his class and a favorite of his teachers ? He is a Mr. Smartypants and has really come a long way. He trusts me, and that helps a lot. He even lets me cut his hair LOL. He loves his momma, and his momma loves him to pieces. Don’t know what I’d do without him. He

Love at first Site

In July 2018, my husband and I stopped by Tiny Lions and the HSHV while driving town with only the intent of playing with the kitties. I saw Norah (formerly Rosebud) and fell in love with her immediately! Though she was initially timid, she is now completely at home in our family! She loves following and mimicking her big brother Wayne, chasing sparkly toys around the house, chirping at my husband, and sleeping on her favorite fleece blanket. We can’t imagine life without this beautiful, energetic, and cuddly girl!   Rosebud now Norah

5 ways to help furry friends in frigid temperatures

Brrr… it’s cold outside!  Here are 5 tips on helping our four-legged friends when the temperature dips. Bring them in. If it’s too cold for you, it’s too cold for them! Just like people, animals are subject to frostbite — especially on paws and ears. And also just like people, our elderly and very young pets are the most vulnerable. Keep them indoors as much as possible. Gimme shelter. Make sure animals who live outdoors have a wind-free shelter; warm, dry bedding (e.g., plenty of straw); and extra food and fresh (not frozen) water. If animals don’t have fresh water to drink,

Meant to Be

I adopted Jack (formerly Reptar) in March 2018 after my first fur baby passed. On January 2, I had to say goodbye, yet again, to my second fur baby. When I came to HSHV to pick up the ashes, my best friend and her sons said we ought to look at Dog Town while we were there. Go figure, some Chihuahuas had been dropped off a few hours earlier and I’d just put down my 16 year old Chihuahua. Long story short, I adopted Benji (formerly Junior) one week ago, and he & Jack have quickly become brothers. Thank you

In defense of the powerless

As Americans, we treasure our right to free speech and peaceably assemble. As animal lovers, we depend on these rights to speak out for those who can’t do so for themselves. Throughout history, sentient but defenseless animals have been treated as inanimate objects, used and abused by anyone with the desire to do so. Though we still have a long way to go, from wildlife to animals kept in confinement, protections from unnecessary suffering and mass extinction only exist because of courageous and compassionate people willing to stand up for them. Recently, members of Ann Arbor City Council tried to

Hollie loves her new home!

We adopted Bev (now Hollie) for my mother after we lost our dog. Hollie is such a good girl! She is still getting used to her new home and her baby sister, but she is a lot more active than she used to be. When we first adopted her, she had an ulcer in her left eye but she was able to power through it (with some help). She is very comfortable in her new home, and she has the the cutest little face!!   Bev now Hollie
