The Need
Each year the Humane Society of Huron Valley (HSHV) rescues thousands of abused, homeless and unwanted animals, and makes loving matches between families and pets. Created in 1896, we have been at the forefront of animal welfare in our community, but we now face a serious crisis related to our facilities.
Originally built in 1951, our shelter is dilapidated, overcrowded, congested and suffers from inadequate cleaning systems, air quality, and noise control. This combined with poor layout (e.g., cats next to barking dogs, little isolation for sick animals) causes the spread of disease and high levels of stress that creates sickness and behavioral problems that can affect an animal’s adoptability. The dark and dank feel repels potential adopters, and the overall conditions make the work of dedicated volunteers and staff much more difficult.
We are determined to build a modern facility - one that will allow HSHV to be a model of best practices in animal sheltering, prevention services, and community support - one that will save more lives and give more animals a second chance at finding loving, lifelong homes.
Our Plans for the Future
The new 26,000 square foot Humane Society building will be located at our current 3100 Cherry Hill Rd. location, just south of where the existing building is now situated. In its new facility, the Humane Society of Huron Valley will welcome visitors and volunteers with more space for everyone to enjoy the animals we care for.

The new building will provide a healthy, low-stress, family-friendly environment to house cats, dogs, and other animals that are ready to be adopted. The design of the shelter will provide ample space, state-of-the-art noise and disease control, and stress-reducing animal housing. These improvements will greatly increase our adoption placements.
The new shelter will have a main entrance for adoptions and the veterinary clinic. The expanded intake
areas, situated away from the main entrance, will house newly arrived animals, giving them time to adjust and be evaluated by our trained staff.
The highlight of the new building will be the focus on prevention and education. The training room was designed for school tours, dog training, and as an area for volunteers to work with our pets. This multi-purpose room is key to offering new community programs and education about animal care and the services we provide.
The Goals
Overall we want to increase adoptions and reduce euthanasia by offering the best care for our animals. We also want to provide better education so we can help prevent animal abandonment and cruelty.
Reduce Stress to keep our animals healthier, happier and more adoptable.
Prevent Disease to keep our animals from getting sick and prevent euthanasia.
Create Warm and Welcoming Facilities to provide the best customer service possible, and bring in more potential adopters.
Allow More Opportunities for Socialization between People and Animals so the humans and animals can bond more quickly and increase our adoptions.
Focus on Education and Prevention can address the root causes of animal abuse, homelessness, abandonment and overpopulation.
Create a Better Work Space so we can do our work more efficiently and effectively.
Being a Better Neighbor by being quieter, more aesthetically pleasing, and by being more environmentally friendly.
