Thank you for considering adopting and saving a life!

Our goal is to provide you with the knowledge you need to adopt while making the process a positive experience, so here are some things to know.

We believe there’s a good pet for every good person. And we’ll work hard to help you find your match! To adopt at HSHV, you must be at least 18 years of age. We welcome all folks, from any county or state.

We are open to the public, no appointment necessary. Walk-ins are welcome!

If you plan on adopting, please plan to spend at least an hour with us, and bring your driver’s license or other government-issued ID with proof of address.

In order to visit with our adoptable pets, the first step is to complete an adoption survey. You can do this when you arrive or save time by filling one out online. (You can find them below) A survey is required to visit one-on-one with a pet.

Once you have submitted your adoption survey, an adoption specialist will help you visit with the pet(s) you are interested in. Our knowledgeable staff will give you all of the information we have regarding the pet(s) and help you prepare for your new friend.

Adoptions at HSHV are first come, first served, and first approved!

After you’ve found your match, we’ll complete your adoption paperwork, and you will pay the adoption fee.

In addition to covering the cost to spay/neuter, microchip, deworm, and vaccinate the animals, adoption fees help offset the cost of caring for the animals prior to being adopted. Thank you for your adoption fee!

While there are exceptions, adoptions are typically same day.

If you have a dog and wish to adopt another, we may require a dog-to-dog interaction. Give us a call if you have questions!

If you need some time to prepare or think about adopting, you may place a 24-hour hold on a pet. Holds are limited to one 24-hour hold per family.

Yes! You may complete an adoption “application” (really, a questionnaire) below, or you can complete one at the shelter.

Our website is always up-to-date with those who are available for adoption; however, sometimes animals can be seen in our shelter before they’re ready for adoption, and can be placed on hold after you visit with them. These animals might need their spay/neuter surgery, for instance, and may not be able to go home with you same-day. This often happens with kittens and puppies; people see them in our shelter and start the adoption process before they’re ready! Point being: Come in and see us!

Keep checking! Things change every day at HSHV; one day we’ll have a rooster, the next, a Chocolate Lab puppy! You can also sign up for a Pet Alert email notification.

While we hope to find you the ideal match, we understand sometimes it doesn’t work out. Please call our intake department at (734) 661-3528 or come in to discuss. If there are behavior issues you’d like to try to work on first, please sign up for the Maddie’s Pet Assistant App listed in your adoption packet.

Congratulations on your new friend! Your adoption packet has lots of information, and you can find copies of all of it here.

Hooray! Thank you for adopting! Please share your adoption story; you might inspire others to take the selfless act you did, too!
