Rescue

The Humane Society of Huron Valley is "on call" to rescue sick or injured, animals, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. We bring the animals back to our shelter to be properly cared for by our veterinarians and trained shelter staff. We rescue sick or injured domestic animals as well as sick or injured wildlife. Whenever possible, we work with our local Friends of Wildlife organization for rehabilitation and release.

HSHV provides 24 hour rescue services for sick and injured wildlife and stray animals.  Please note that HSHV does not accept healthy animals, including feral cats or wildlife, for euthanasia.  Please contact our Trap, Neuter and Return Coordinator for issues regarding feral cats at (734) 662-5585.  Please go to http://www.hsus.org/wildlife/urban_wildlife_our_wild_neighbors/for more information on humane solutions to wildlife problems.

Our Partners - Friends of Wildlife

Cruelty

Our Cruelty Investigator responds to reports of potential animal cruelty and neglect and, if necessary, works with local law enforcement to prosecute offenders. If you suspect cruelty or neglect, please call us at 734-662-5585, x112. Leave the address, with major cross streets, and a detailed account of what type of cruelty you suspect. Your name and phone number is also helpful, as we may need additional information. We will keep your information confidential.

Michigan law defines cruelty as any of the following:

  • Failure to provide an animal with adequate food, water, a shelter or medical treatment
  • Improperly tethering (or chaining) an animal
  • Abandoning or causing an animal to be abandoned without providing for the animal's adequate care
  • Cruelly beating, torturing, maiming or killing an animal
  • Willfully or negligently allowing an animal to suffer unnecessarily
  • Transporting an animal in a vehicle in a cruel or inhumane manner
  • Either poisoning or exposing an animal to poison
  • The cropping of a dog's ears or the docking of a dog's tails, unless such cropping is performed by a registered veterinary surgeon while the dog is under anesthetic
