The Humane Society of Huron Valley has several volunteer opportunities available and a variety of ways YOU can make a difference in the lives of animals!
All volunteers start at the Paw level and remain at this level for five weeks. The Paw level gives volunteers time to become familiar with our shelter and staff. Volunteers should complete 10 hours of service during this time.
Paw jobs include:
- Shelter cleaning
- Administrative assistance
- Maintenance support
After completing the first five weeks and at least 10 hours of service, volunteers 18 years and older can request to be trained in one of our Shelter Animal Program or Volunteer Service areas. Based on individual skills and our volunteer needs, volunteers requesting training can begin hands-on animal care or choose to receive training in other volunteer service areas. Volunteers should complete at least 40 hours of service during this time.
Paw jobs include:
- Dog Walker
- Cat & Small Animal Comforter
- Foster Parent
- Trap-Neuter-Return Caregiver
- Greeter
- Bountiful Bowl Program distribution and food pick-up
- Canister Collection
- Veterinary Clinic support
- Paws to Shop retail support
- Community Outreach and Event help
Volunteers interested in expanding their volunteering horizon can request training to advance to the Paw level. Volunteers requesting training can expand their knowledge in animal handling and adoption support areas.
Paw jobs include:
- Adoption Counselors
- Adoption Follow-up Specialists
- Groomers
- Foster Parent level 2
Volunteers interested in becoming "experts" can advance to the Paw level. This high level of commitment will enable volunteers with proper training to become advanced animal handlers.
Paw jobs include:
- Dogtown Monitors
- Cattown Monitors
- Foster Parent level 3
- Dog Walker level 2 and above
- Cat & Small Animal Comforter level 2 and above
Advancement throughout the volunteer program is based on our volunteer needs, individual skill and additional training to ensure each volunteer is ready for greater responsibility in handling animals.
ALL animal handling volunteer positions require a commitment of 2 hours per week to remain active in the Shelter Animal Program. This is a big commitment. If you are unable to fit this in your schedule we truly understand and would love for you to consider helping us fulfill one of the many other Volunteer Services opportunities.
Volunteers are a valuable part of the lifesaving work being done every day at the Humane Society of Huron Valley! If you are interested in pursuing the commitment to be a volunteer, fill out the online volunteer application.
