I love my sweet girl

I can’t believe it’s only been a month since we adopted her. She’s spicy and sweet, and the queen of the house. When I first adopted her, she didn’t like to be picked up or held. I kept her in a small room so she wouldn’t be overwhelmed, and spent lots of time with her. She eventually let me pet her, and then pick her up. I very gradually introduced her to my two other cats. Patrick, who was also adopted from HSHV, fell in love with her, but Tyrion wants to be the king of the house and isn’t

We found our forever best friend

Back in May (May 20th, 2024 to be exact), my boyfriend and I took a trip to the shelter. We were going to “ just look”. Needless to say, sweet Penelope stole our hearts immediately. Since then, we’ve had many ups and downs, adjusting as a family of three. But we could not be happier! She loves to cuddle, go for rides in the car and of course long walks!! And obviously she’s on Instagram @penelopethehuskyy Penelope, now Penelope Paige

So grateful for HSHV for bringing me Thomas

I got my kitty named LC (he’s Thomas now) when I was 19 here. HSHV trusted me to adopt him even though I wasn’t technically old enough at the time. That was back in 2016 and we’ve had 8 amazing years together. We’ve been on many adventures moving from Michigan to our apartment on the beach near Boston, MA now living with his dog brother Oliver who he loves very much, as of course, he loves everyone and everything he meets. Tom’s going into his golden years now turning 14 this year and I cannot thank HSHV enough for all

Oliver Blue Foster Failure 3/2012.

For about 6 years, 2008-2014, I was a puppy foster for HSHV. On March 24, 2012, the foster manager called and asked if I would be willing to take a male puppy, 9 weeks old, who wasn’t doing good with his siblings at another foster’s home and we said we would. Oliver Blue came into our home and decided he was here to stay. From that point forward he helped foster many of the puppies that came to us. He was very helpful with potty training and playing with them. Blue was very selective of the people he trusted. As

Gopher Guy’s journey!

On May 3rd (my birthday), my mom and I were scrolling the list of adoptable animals at Huron Valley. We were truthfully just looking at all the kitties names without thinking of adopting any as my father and I are allergic. However, when we saw Gopher’s photo we immediately knew we needed to know his story. Not much was known about his backstory other than he was really sick and had to have both eyes removed due to injury and infection. That was Friday, and at opening on Sunday morning we were there to meet Goph. He was still very

Dog takes Empty the Shelters™ to heart

Ann Arbor, MI (July 17, 2024) – To alleviate the strain of an overflowing shelter and find families for homeless animals, Humane Society of Huron Valley (HSHV) is currently participating in “Empty the Shelters,” a national adoption event sponsored by the Bissell Pet Foundation. And one senior pup is taking matters into his own paws. Tiki, an incredibly sweet 10-year-old stray dog found in Washtenaw County, has escaped the shelter – twice. Because HSHV is so full, he was housed in a staff office—typically considered a nice place for an animal to stay. “He was put in his crate in

How to pick the right cat for you

You’ve decided you’re ready to adopt a cat! How do you pick the right one? Here are some tips to keep in mind when looking for the best fit possible for your lifestyle. If you have an active home with lots of people or kids, look for a cat who is actively seeking attention. These kitties may be cats who adjust easily or are less concerned with lots of noise and commotion and who would likely do well in a busier home. If you have a very quiet home, or are away from home much of the day, keep in

It only took 6 years of asking for a dog!

Last summer, after trying to convince my parents for six years that we should get a dog, we adopted August (we just call him Gus). I wrote letters to my parents, made a Google Doc presentation about the benefits and drawbacks of having a dog, and basically begged. For YEARS. And now we have one! Gus is doing great! He just had his first birthday and he is sitting next to me as I write this. He is very happy, and his butt is very floofy. Paco now August (Gus)
