With heavy hearts we notify you of the passing of our dear Donut. We adopted him in September 2019. He was approximately 10 years old when we adopted him and had the beginning stages of kidney failure. He had been at HSHV for some time. Donut was a wonderful little boy and brought great love and joy to our home. In turn we were able to provide him with love and a quality of life in his remaining years. We will miss him dearly.

One in a million chance.
In July of 2022, my dog Buddy (Love Train alumni) had to be put down unexpectedly at two and a half years old. After four hours at the HSHV vet, I went home without him. Weeks later, I took my niece and nephew with me to pick up his pawprints. We decided to look around and cheer ourselves up before the ride home. We entered one of the cat rooms and noticed an adult cat sitting at her kennel door. She put her head against the door, I put my hand in, and she rubbed against me. Something just clicked.

Happy Life for Chi
Chi, now Fergus, was an owner surrender, severely emaciated and heavily matted. I adopted him at the end of February and he has become my best buddy! Happy to say he is happy, gaining weight and we have lots of fun adventures together. Thank you to HSHV for the wonderful care they provided and the ease of adoption. I love my new pal! Once in a lifetime love
Penny (formerly Azure), named after Penthesilea, queen of the Amazons, has truly completed our home! When going onto HSHV’s website to set up alerts for birds, I saw our Penny. I told my fiancé immediately and we knew we had to meet her, as we were ready and confident to own a big bird. We brought our kids to meet the beautiful bird from the pictures, and our hearts melted completely. We talked to her and giggled with each other, to which she chimed in with our laughter, laughing herself! We knew then and there she had to come home

Our Darling Dottie!
Dottie came into our lives on January 13, 2023! She has quite a unique adoption story. Through one of HSHV’s donation programs, my family made a donation in honor of my mom, “Mimi.” HSHV then sent us an email with a picture of a sweet little black pitbull whom they named Mimi as a tribute to our donation. At this point she was already a part of our family and the next day we adopted her!! Her transition into our family has been seamless. We value HSHV’s policy where all animals must meet their potential fur siblings before adoption. Having

Reptar’s long road to recovery
On August 19th 2022, a group of reptiles was surrendered to HSHV. Being reptile certified and working in Back-of-House at HSHV, I was able to assist with checking them in. They weren’t in the best condition, especially this little veiled chameleon sitting in an Amazon box on the counter. When I walked over and slowly put my hand into the box to pick him up, he instantly crawled up on my hand and just stared at me as I lifted my hand out of the box. He never once got upset or tried to bite while we were looking him

Older fur babies are fur babies just the same
Dear HSHV, In September of 2021 we came to the shelter looking for a kitty friend to adopt. Well, while we weren’t expecting to fall in love with two older cats. They have completed our family perfectly. I can’t imagine life without my fur babies, they are my best friends and I absolutely adore them. Peanut is almost 13 and still runs around wanting to play all day long. Violet is almost 11 and follows me around the apartment, yelling at me to pick her up and give her attention. They are the most gentle, loving and easygoing cats I

Welcome Home, Zelda!
We were lucky enough to meet Zelda (formerly Snow Pea) the day she arrived at HSHV. She is a lovely addition to our family, playful and cuddly with an enthusiastic purr. She has been very gracious with our toddler (who adores her) and gradually charming our 10-year-old cat. Snow Pea now Zelda

Willow fills our family’s heart
Today (2/18/2023) is Willow’s 1 year anniversary in her forever home. Our family had just lost our senior boys a handful of months earlier, within 2 months of one another. Both Kovu and Spencer were between 15 and 16 years old. My daughter and I pushed my wife hard to check out the Love Train. We didn’t get to it earlier in the day but went after all of the other adopters, and in the room there were about 8-10 cages with puppies left from earlier in the day waiting for new homes. We spoke with the very pleasant staff
