About the Day of Service program

What is it and when is it offered? Offered monthly, this 3-hour program includes education about HSHV, shelter tour, meet-and-greet with an adoptable dog, and 2 hours of hands-on volunteer time. Choose from morning or afternoon sessions.

Who can participate? Groups of up to 10, all age 18+. While we work to accommodate all volunteers, we recommend that volunteers be able to lift up to 20 lbs. We welcome groups that may include adults who have cognitive or physical impairments. To ensure everyone has a fun, successful day volunteering, we ask that caregivers or a person of support attend with any adults who may need extra assistance. Unfortunately, we are unable to accept Court Ordered volunteers for this program. For groups under age of 18, please see our JV program.

What will we be doing? Volunteer assignments are based on our shelter’s need at the time. Typical assignments include administrative work, landscape support, mulch spreading, and cleaning. While we work to accommodate all volunteers, we recommend that volunteers be able to lift up to 20 lbs, and request that caregivers or a person of support attend with adults who may need extra assistance. (Please note that, besides the meet-and-greet portion of the program, volunteer assignments include very little interactions with animals. See our individual volunteer program, that includes animal handling training, for that!)

Is there a fee, and what’s included? To cover the cost of materials, background check (ensuring no convictions related to abuse, violence, fraud or theft), staff time, and to support the work of HSHV, we charge a nominal fee of $10 per person, due at registration. We’ll also provide your group with light snacks, coffee and water that day!

What should we wear? Please wear comfortable clothes suitable for the weather (some time may be spent outdoors, weather permitting) and that are okay to get a little dirty. For your safety, we require closed-toed shoes, even in summer.

What if we need to cancel? Please contact our Volunteer Manager. Cancellations received more than 60 days prior to your scheduled date can be refunded in full. We regret that cancellations made fewer than 60 days before your group’s scheduled date cannot be refunded.
