7th Graders Make a Difference

7th Graders from St. James of Novi were inspired to complete a service project to help the shelter animals. By collecting donations such as pet food, treats and even making their own pet toys for enrichment, these students have kindly given so much to the animals. On behalf of all the shelter animals and staff at HSHV, we thank you so much for your kind hearts to help continue keeping the animals here safe, happy and healthy before finding their forever homes. Thank you, St. James 7th graders!

Girl Scouts Give Back to Animals

Avery sure does love animals and her girl scout troop is always trying to help! That is why Avery made dog and cat toys to sell at the farmers market. She then had the thoughtful idea of donating the toys that were left over to HSHV! We can’t thank you enough for your generous donation to the animals here at the shelter and hope you know that you have made a very positive impact to the dogs and cats while they wait for their forever homes. Thank you so much, Avery!

Rosie in Full Bloom!

Former Tiny Lion Rosie came home with us (myself and my boyfriend) in August after an arduous trial of certification and recommendations and verification to get an emotional support animal, but it was worth every single bump in the road to have her with us. She who started out as a shy kitty is now the queen of our household who doesn’t hesitate to tell us what’s on her mind. She has us wrapped tightly around her little thumbs, and we wouldn’t have it any other way. Rosie works tirelessly day and night to keep me emotionally supported (see the

From rags to riches!

Parrot was originally from a hoarding situation this past summer. We adopted her once HSHV won in court. She is now spoiled daily, living with one other Macaw, Sun Conure, Saint Bernard, and two older kids. This morning, she gets down off her cage, walks to my bedroom and wants to snuggle. I come back from getting coffee, and she’s scratching my husband’s back. I’d say she has finally adjusted to her new freedom!

We always have room in our hearts

After a grieving period following the passing of our senior dogs, we were ready for a new family member. We fell in love with Evie’s Love Train photo, and hoped she would like us. As we waited in line on a snowy Friday morning in February, we were so excited to meet her! When the HSHV volunteer brought her to us, she was a little anxious, but immediately wriggled up into our laps and snuggled close. She liked us!!! We love her!! Some tears of joy were shed as we opened our hearts to this bundle of cuteness. She is

Love at first sight

My boyfriend and I adopted Nibbler a few months ago. When we first met him, he was so shy around people and was hiding from them. We walked by him, and he came running out to us just, wanting to play. It was love at first sight. He wasn’t what we were looking for when we walked in, but when we met him there was no way we couldn’t take him home. He’s our baby boy now. He turned a year old in June and is just becoming more himself with age. He’s spoiled rotten and well-loved. Nibbler brings joy

I’ve got a buddy for life!

Buddy was dropped off earlier 2018 at HSHV, adopted by another family for a month, then brought back. He’s just an older guy who needed a warm bed to snuggle in, and now he has one for the rest of his life. He was named Buddy because that’s exactly what he has become: my best Bud! Buddy still has some issues/PTSD with larger dogs, but he is slowly improving and is a completely different dog than what he was when he was first brought home. It is VERY possible to own a dog in college, and Buddy has become a
