Girl Scouts Love Animals!

The Bird Girl Scouts Troop 40226 are big time animal lovers! The girls came to HSHV for a field trip last year and loved learning about the animals in need. Many would like to volunteer when they are old enough. Because the Girl Scouts love the animals and wanted to help in some way, they decided to make dog and cat toys to give to them while they await their forever homes! We hope you all know how appreciative HSHV is for your thoughtful donations to the HSHV animals. You have all made a difference to help keep the animals

Maria’s Birthday Gifts to Animals!

Maria really just wants to help animals find their forever homes. That is why she decided that instead of asking for her own birthday gifts this year, she thought it would be a great idea to ask for gifts to give to the animals at HSHV! She was able to collect many wonderful  donations including dog food, cat food and toys for the animals. We hope you know how much the staff and animals appreciate your kind donations. You have helped to ensure the animals continue to stay healthy, safe and happy while waiting for their forever homes! Thank you

Blood doesn’t make a brother, love does

I adopted Jack (formally Gad) in July of 2017. Previously, I had never owned a cat. But good news: Jack had never been anyone’s cat before, so we figured everything out together. I was told he was brought in as a stray, no mom, no siblings. He was considered a cautious kitten and need a little extra time to adjust. Jack learned to enjoy going for walks on his leash, make new friends with the neighbor dogs, and travel to relatives’ houses for the holidays. After a move to a new home, it felt like something was missing. At the

Molly and Emmie, sisters from different misters

When Our 13 year old Yoshi died from cancer ,we were so heartbroken that it took another year for us to look again. We went to HSHV to look at puppies from the Puppy Train (a.k.a., Love Train). Instead of a puppy, we found River (now Molly). We decided to walk her, and before we took five steps we knew she was the one. We all were floored by how much she resembled our Yoshi and we were more shocked to see that on her paperwork her estimated birthday was the day that Yoshi passed away. It was like she

Daughter Wore Us Down

Our daughter has asked for a dog since she could talk. She has had fish, hamsters, guinea pigs, and hermit crabs, but we did not want a dog due to my husband’s dog allergy. Every Christmas and birthday, “dog” was at the top of her list. She walked other people’s dogs to be near them, visited pet stores and played with dogs, and would go on rescue sites daily. When the TV is on, there is a dog show on such as Pitbulls and Parolees. Well a week ago, on a whim, I told her we could visit a dog

Loner Turned Lover — Uffda Gets A Brother

November, 2010 … I brought home Uffda (formerly Puma) from HSHV. I had been told by the adoption counselor that he did not get along with other cats and that he should be an only cat for life. One thing is for certain — he has lots of love to give and is going to continue to get all kinds of loving for life. A couple of years later, we moved to Massachusetts. My lifestyle here is not much different than what it was in Michigan, but my neighbors here reported seeing Uffda in an upstairs window yowling for some

We love our pretty penny

We had been looking for a puppy for a while when we lucked out and happened to check the shelter in January of 2017 when several of the 19 Hines Park puppies went up for adoption. Hope, now Penny, was so sweet, I knew she was for us. She immediately took to my daughter, and they are still two peas in a pod. Penny will be two this month, and she’s made our furry family complete. She even mostly gets along with her kitty brothers, one of which is also a HSHV alumni.   Hope now Penny

Sweet Ginny joins our small family

I came to the humane society looking for an adult cat to pair with my rambunctious kitten Drogo. Ginny (formerly Tilly), drew my attention immediately with her pretty markings and sweet charm. When the cage was opened, she immediately snuggled into my lap, and I knew she was the one! We brought her home, and her favorite place is right by my side on the couch! I know, with a little time, she and Drogo will be best of friends! Thank you, Humane Society of Huron Valley, for giving us the two lights of our life!   Tilly now Ginny
