We were looking for a new friend for our 6/27/20 Love Train dog George (given name Rafael) after our much-loved 16 year old furry family member passed away in April. We decided we didn’t have it in us to get another puppy, and wanted an older dog closer to George’s age. We were directed to the Private Adoptions page at HSHV. It was there that we found Eevee. Eevee’s people just had a baby and lived in an apartment, and didn’t think they could give Eevee the attention they thought she deserved. They made the very difficult decision to find

Environmental experts to discuss why Ann Arbor was smart to stop the deer cull
Proponents of culling deer say it’s “Deer vs. the Environment,” but the truth is more complicated. And for Ann Arbor, who’s been paying to kill deer for more than 5 years, it’s been expensive, divisive, and arguably unsuccessful. Though cancelled for the last two years due to the pandemic and budgetary constraints, some policy makers still believe culling is necessary to protect the environment. Two prominent scientists and field researchers answer questions on why putting it back in the budget would be a mistake from an ecological perspective. Dr. Oswald Schmitz, Oastler Professor of Population and Community Ecology at the

Classroom Kindness
Mill Creek Middle School is so kind! They love animals and helping. Because they are currently working on caring and kindness in their class, the students decided to donate to HSHV. They made toys for the animals out of old T-shirts, and the students and staff brought in towels and blankets. The students then donated the blankets, towels, and toys they made to HSHV to help our animal residents. Thank you so much, Mill Creek Middle School! We appreciate your kindness, and we know the animals will love the toys you made for them!

My cat was my dog
Midas I’m a lifelong dog lover. Never hated cats, but they didn’t move me the way dogs do. Well, all that changed in the late 90’s! Too many years of landlords with “No Dogs Allowed” policies made me pet-starved to the point I just wanted a mammal I could have and love. I still had requirements: short hair, preferably more quiet, and a male. I had a love for black dog breeds so I wanted same in a cat, but the short hair and not really “yowly” was more important than looks. Number One thing, though? For me, as dog

Purrcy’s furever home
Juju now Purrcy Hello! This is Purrcy, our lil rag tag kitty cat. Earlier this year, I went to HSHV looking for a special kitty – someone who could get along with the most bratty of older cats – and I found him on the first go. Having just gotten out of surgery, he was a bit wobbly, but it was easy to see his personality shine through. After bringing him home, he quickly became besties with our pupper, Delilah, and it’s been a slow journey but he and our 10 year old kitty, Elphaba, now actually play and lay

Louis’ Journey to Bliss
I was never a cat person, nor had I ever thought of getting one ever in my life. Yet, when COVID first happened, my partner lost his job like many others have. He felt a bit bored and lonely at home, so I brought up the idea of adopting a pet. We both agreed that it had to be a cat, as we didn’t have a yard to for a dog. When searching, we fell upon Louis who had the biggest, brightest eyes and the roundest cheeks. My partner wasn’t sure when he read that he had FeLv and FIV,

New homes for two sweet kitties!
Stormy & Soot now Marceline & Mortimer We adopted Marceline (Stormy) in June of 2017. When we first walked in the door, there was a cage by the front area and a little white arm shot out and batted at the paperwork on the front. My husband said, “I want that one!” Little did we know, that was our Marci! We went to see another cat whose picture I had seen online but she didn’t seem like a good fit, so we decided to come back to see the one by the door. We took her out of the cage
