The Students of Summers-Knoll are so kind! Eloise, Aurora, Gem, Lucas, Momo, Alex, Jack, Niam, Ahmad, Evie, Piper, and Rebecca held a bake/craft sale to raise funds for the homeless animals at HSHV! They were inspired to help the animals after attending a field trip at HSHV, where they learned about the importance of helping animals. Thank you so much for the wonderful donation! We are so grateful for your kindness and generosity, and we know the animals are too!

Why aren’t lost dogs getting back home in Washtenaw County?
The Humane Society of Huron Valley (HSHV), the only shelter in Washtenaw County and Plymouth for stray animals, has seen a significant decrease in the number of animals returned to owners this year.
While HSHV has been taking in more lost/stray animals than in past years, in 2023, the shelter has only been able to return 43% of lost dogs to owners; that’s the lowest in over 20 years. An increasing number of dogs are coming in without tags or microchips, or if they do, they have incorrect information.

Once in a lifetime love
Penny (formerly Azure), named after Penthesilea, queen of the Amazons, has truly completed our home! When going onto HSHV’s website to set up alerts for birds, I saw our Penny. I told my fiancé immediately and we knew we had to meet her, as we were ready and confident to own a big bird. We brought our kids to meet the beautiful bird from the pictures, and our hearts melted completely. We talked to her and giggled with each other, to which she chimed in with our laughter, laughing herself! We knew then and there she had to come home

What To Do With Community Cats When Moving?
What To Do With Community Cats When Moving? Many people wonder what to do with their colony when an unexpected situation forces them to move. The best solution typically depends varies based on the situation. Sometimes, the current caretaker is the only local caretaker, and it seems that there might be no options other than to let cats fend for themselves. Rest assured that there are a number of different steps that can be taken first, and even in a worst case situation, there are ways to minimize the pain for our feline friends as they relearn to fend for

Our Darling Dottie!
Dottie came into our lives on January 13, 2023! She has quite a unique adoption story. Through one of HSHV’s donation programs, my family made a donation in honor of my mom, “Mimi.” HSHV then sent us an email with a picture of a sweet little black pitbull whom they named Mimi as a tribute to our donation. At this point she was already a part of our family and the next day we adopted her!! Her transition into our family has been seamless. We value HSHV’s policy where all animals must meet their potential fur siblings before adoption. Having
