Destined to be besties

I didn’t exactly plan to adopt Kailua (Marco Chopper) and Forest (Bear) when I went for a visit, but I fell in love. Both of these boys had a rough start to life, with a variety of medical issues, but our vet set everyone right, and all is well now. Kailua and Forest weren’t a bonded pair when they left HSHV together, but they are now. They hate to be apart, and if Forest doesn’t know where Kai is at any time, he begins to cry loudly until Kai pops in to let him know he’s still there. They wrestle

JVs Going Above and Beyond!

HSHV is already lucky enough to have Aileen, Nancy and Isabel as Junior Volunteers, but they recently went above and beyond for our shelter.  The three JVs decided to hold a bake sale for HSHV and donate all the profits.  The money they donated will be used to help the animals of our community, and we’re so grateful!  Thank you Isabel, Nancy and Aileen!

Benevolent Brandon

Brandon spent some of his time this summer volunteering with the YMCA’s Youth Volunteer Core, and during that volunteer time he made many blankets and toys for the animals at HSHV!  Brandon is a big animal lover, but he chose this project especially to honor family friend, Ryan Keating.  According to Brandon, Ryan was passionate about positive animal care, and Brandon knew he would appreciate a donation to the Humane Society.  Thank you for your kindness, Brandon!

Sasha’s forever home

I adopted Sasha (formerly Felicity) May 30th. I had started volunteering at HSHV in February and she was one of the first dogs to catch my eye, but I wasn’t ready for a dog yet. When she was still there in May I knew I had to adopt her. I had originally planned on keeping her name, but it was a mouthful and she wasn’t very responsive to it. Over the past couple of months she has definitely come out her shell; she’s very playful (loves to be chased), loving, affectionate and will demand pets. Most of the time when

Safe, loved, and silly!

I met Remy (then Dilemma) one Friday after work. I spent the next week thinking about him and showing his picture to friends and coworkers, debating if it was the right time to get another cat. My old cat had died a few months before and I wasn’t sure I would ever get another. But something about Remy just kept calling to me. The next Friday, I came right over after work and asked to meet him. He leaned his head right into mine, and I knew he was mine. I came to pick him up the next morning. He’s

Anxious Girl Finds Her Forever Home

We adopted Mishmish (formerly Apple Bloom) on February 19th, 2023 from HSHV, hoping to find a friend for our resident cat, Yeimy! Very quickly, we realized that Mishmish had anxiety-induced aggression, severe territorial issues and lacked proper socialization. While this was extremely stressful, we worked with the vets at HSHV over the last 6 months to try and make this work for her, our resident cat and our family! This meant we tried combinations of anxiety meds, arthritis shots, (re)started cat introductions multiple times and anything you can imagine. I’m happy to share that 6 months after adopting her and

Bamboozled at First Sight

We had talked about adopting a dog for awhile, and in September of 2021 we finally took the plunge to look at the Love Train dogs knowing we would inevitably come back with one. We have three cats and are pretty low-key, so wanted to find a dog who wasn’t too rambunctious and would fit in well with our family (and ideally one who wouldn’t chase our cats around the house). As we passed by all the puppies and dogs in the cages, we came across one puppy who was sitting far back in the corner of his crate, not
