In 2020, we were looking for an energetic cat to be a companion to our 1-year-old cat Curtis, since he constantly wanted to play and our other cat just wanted to be left alone. We looked around online for a cat who was older than Curtis with high energy. That was when we found Wonder Boi’s picture and description. We went to meet him the next day. Immediately, he was warm and loving to us, and he had freckles on his nose like me. We loved him right away. We adopted him, took him home, and after a few months

Happy Gotcha Anniversary, Sweet Esther!
One year ago today (August 1), this sweet special needs senior walked into my heart and home. There have definitely been challenges with her multiple health issues, including two scary ER visits, yet Esther perseveres and shows an amazing will to live. We are truly grateful for the support of many friends and especially to her guardian angels (foster parents Luann and Dave) who have been unwavering in their devotion to Esther from day one. We will never know what she endured before she landed at HSHV. But I know the rest of her days will be filled with love

Yes, we adopted a pigeon!
I’ve never been a bird person. I always thought birds were, well, weird (sorry, bird lovers!). When my teenage son saw a pigeon the the HSHV website and declared he wanted to adopt it, I first tasked him with research, figuring he’d lose interest. Instead, he presented a Google doc full of facts like “Pigeons are almost as smart as primates” and “Pigeon poop doesn’t stink! If you can smell the poop, the bird is sick.” After that, I decided to take him to HSHV under the guise of meeting the pigeon and asking some questions, with the plan to

Zoey found her forever home!
I came to HSHV the day before Independence Day to look at adopting a dog for my birthday. We met Zoey and instantly fell in love! She is the sweetest dog and definitely has a sense of humor. Every day she has made us smile, laugh, and love her more and more. This past weekend we took her camping in Ludington, and she loved it! Car rides are one of her favorite activities and now she loves tent camping. Adopting Zoey was one of the best decisions!

Barn cat lives where he works
Juice is the chillest cat who just does his own thing. He was adopted once before and returned to the shelter for being “too much of an outside cat.” That’s actually perfect for us since he’s got a job to do keeping our barn free of mice! He doesn’t mind living on his own and seeks us out when he needs some extra attention. He’s so gentle with my daughter and they became fast friends. He’s the perfect cat for us! OJ now Juice

Splendid Siblings
Eleanor and Iris are such kind kids! They visited HSHV with their family and noticed the donation boxes for dogs with heartworm, which inspired them to raise money for the dogs at HSHV! Eleanor and Iris collected spare change from family and friends and donated the funds to HSHV. Thank you so much for the wonderful donation, Eleanor and Iris!

Are you catching your dog being good?
It is great to have a dog that responds reliably to cues to “sit,” “stay,” “leave it,” “come,” etc., but wouldn’t it be great if your dog naturally did these behaviors on their own, before you even needed to ask? Often dogs get our attention when they are doing things we don’t like, but we aren’t as good at noticing all the times they are making good decisions naturally. If we train ourselves to notice those moments though, and reinforce them, our dogs’ good habits will become stronger. So, make a practice of “catching your dog being right.” Every day,

Are those cats playing… or fighting?
It can often be difficult to understand if your cats are playing or fighting, causing concern for a lot of cat owners, foster parents and folks working with cats in a shelter or rescue environment. There are a few things you can look for to have a better idea of when to step in and de-escalate or let them continue playing. First, it’s important to know that kittens are still learning to understand boundaries, and one of the ways they learn that is from other cats. Through play, they learn body language, vocalizations and how to create space when needed.
