Helpful Hana

Hana is so kind! Hana wanted to help the kitties and puppies at HSHV, so they worked hard raising money at a local holiday market.  Funds were raised by creating and selling sugar scrub! All proceeds were then donated to HSHV.  Thank you so much, Hana!  We greatly appreciate your thoughtful donation.

Nora – the best part of My 2024

I met Nora on February 18th, 2024. I had been thinking about adopting a cat and went to HSHV several times to look around. Every kitty there was adorable and sweet in their own way – but I was waiting to get that special “feeling” when I met a cat! As soon as I sat down and opened the cage to visit with Nora, she crawled right into my lap, I started crying, and I knew I had to adopt my little girl. Every day since then has brought a new kind of joy into my life. Nora truly is

A Diamond In The Rough

My wife and I lost our wonderful red heeler, Rose, last year. She was a rescue from AuCaDo up north and when we made the decision to get another pup we knew we wanted to adopt again. We met several dogs through HSHV but it was so difficult to make a decision. One of my wife’s coworkers suggested making a list of the top traits that we considered important and the next time we went in to walk a few dogs one of the wonderful HSHV workers recommended that we meet Lily, who was Jolie at the time. She was

Two Stray Soulmates

My partner, Brad, and I started looking for a second dog when we noticed our first dog, Fauci, was lonely. At first, it was hard to pinpoint that he was yearning for another furry friend. Fauci can sometimes be reactive around other dogs, but the only time he would really perk up and act himself was on visits with my sister’s dogs. So we decided we’d set out to find a new member of the family. Fast forward to seeing Nuri’s description on HSHV. She was described as sweet, but very shy, and she “required” another furry sibling in the

Chai’s First Month in her home

Chai came to us last month sorta unexpectedly but we couldn’t imagine a better fit. She was so tiny and skittish when I met her at her foster’s but in just a few short days she got comfortable with her new brothers (our two other cats and a dog!). We were so worried about the little tripod kitty coming home with us but she has been small but mighty. She enjoys her days now as my shadow and chasing her new kitty brother around the house! She’s sweet and sassy but such a perfect fit! Chai

Regarding Milan’s beloved wild turkey

On December 10, 2024, our Animal Cruelty Investigation and Emergency Rescue team responded to a call from the Sheriff’s Department asking for assistance with a wild turkey. There were concerns that this turkey, living in a busy parking lot, was in danger of being hit by a car, and there were also complaints from community members about aggressive behavior. HSHV assisted in this situation with only one intention — to help with relocation — and had the ability to do so immediately. However, unbeknownst to us, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (MDNR) was already on scene, as were several

Sweet girl choses me when i needed her most

I lost my cat the night before, which was so hard I instantly folded the next day and needed a buddy to spend my life with. So I showed up with my family to try and see if any of the cats at the shelter would take to me, or simply show interest in me. When going around I noticed a kitty who was sitting at the back of her cadge, and she started to chirp at me. Once I came over she jumped down to rub up against the bars. I asked to visit with her and the first
