Hi, my name is Montie and I’m now 4 years old. I was only 10 months old when my potential adopters who are now my mom and dad visited me at HSHV. We went for a walk and I was SUCH a good boy and showed them how perfect I could be on walks. I even sat at the kennel door just leaning on the cage and acted so calm waiting for them. When we went for a walk, I just sat down in front of them and starred up at them. That sold them quickly. I was so glad

Boogie the Lookout
After thinking about getting a cat for a while, I decided to visit HSHV just to look. I just wanted to meet a few cats and get an idea of what I was looking for in a cat. I met Boogie (formerly Puddles) right away, and he stole my heart. Even in the shelter, he was sweet and playful and we spent 20 minutes playing and snuggling on our first meeting. He has FLUTD, and I was concerned about having a cat with health issues as the first cat I have ever owned. But I could not stop thinking about

Best of Friends
We adopted Athena in November 2015. She was wonderful with people and kids but had some reactivity to other dogs. With the support of HSHV’s Reactive Rover training class, we were able to learn skills to give Athena the support and structure she needed. In February 2020 while volunteering as a dog walker, I fell in love with Arlo. I wasn’t sure if Athena would accept Arlo. With the support of HSHV’s behavior staff, we were able to do a dog interaction with Athena and Arlo to evaluate the fit before bringing Arlo home. Athena and Arlo mostly ignored each

My boyfriend and I adopted Sadie (once known as Evie) last month as an addition to our family. She is a crazy, adorable ball of energy and keeps us on our toes. She warmed up to us fairly quick and fits perfectly in our home. She loves going on adventures and has already been camping with us! She loves other dogs and play time. We love her so much and can’t wait to spend many more years with her❤️ Thank you so much HSHV! Evie now Sadie

Elliot (Ace) gets the chance to be a good boy
Hello everyone….my name is Elliot, but I once went by the name Ace. I am a 6 month old German Shepherd. I met my new mom and grandma when they came to visit me one Sunday morning in Sept. 2021. I have to admit, I wasn’t on my best behavior when we went for a walk around the HSHV grounds that day. I jumped up on them and pulled on the leash. I nipped at their hands and refused to listen. To be honest, I don’t know why my mom came back for me. But, she says she could see,

Olive finds her family
A few months ago, I noticed that my 3 year old cat Frankie seemed a little lonely. It was just the two of us and I work a lot, so I decided to look into getting him a small friend. I was immediately drawn to a teeny tiny kitten who was super quiet and shy. I brought her home, and after a few long days of slowly introducing her into my house, she met Frankie and it was love at first sight. She’s now a super playful and fun 5 month old kitten who spends every second with her big

Little Fritzy. Such a sweet boy!
I’ve been an HSHV dog walker and saw Fritzy the first day he came into Intake as a stray. We bonded immediately. He loves us very much and the feeling is mutual. We had a great trip to Acadia National Park in August. On the way home in Massachusetts, our car hit a bear. Luckily, he was in a kennel fastened into the back seat. We were all ok, except the car. Please keep your animals restrained in the car. I know it’s easier not to, but you never know what can happen! Fritz now Fritzy

Rose finds the perfect dog mamma
I’ve always wanted two dogs in my family. I just happened to be browsing through HSHV’s website when I came across Rose (Siberian Husky). I quickly gathered my kids and our other dog to meet Rose. The connection was instant and the two dogs got along well, and then the first six months were quite difficult. Rose was diagnosed with anxiety and depression. With lots of care, love and training, Rose is fitting in with our family. Rose has been with our family for 1 year now and she loves camping, doggie day care, jogging with mamma and big sis

Letty finds a home
In March 2020, as I was packing my office equipment to take home because of the lockdown, a coworker told me that I should look into adopting a dog “as a companion for the end of the world, like in that Will Smith movie.” He mentioned that HSHV is just a few miles away from our office. So, I checked the website every few days until I saw Letty’s profile. I saw that Letty was hyperactive and reactive towards other dogs, and could use some training in the future. Drawn to the underdog, I decided to adopt her. She was

Big Bossy Baby
About three months ago, we were looking for a second dog to keep our 5 year old Love Train puppy company. His older “brother” had passed a few months before that, and he seemed to be lonely without another doggy companion. We brought Jack (our black lab mix) to meet a few of the fuzzy babies at HSHV. After a couple of indifferent introductions, he saw Gunner (the anxious, enormous, husky-malamute mix), and let us know that he was the one. So we stuffed them both (200 lbs of dog) into the backseat of our car, and off we went.
