We adopted Sasha when she was 6 months old. She came in on the Love Train, and was adopted and returned within a few weeks. As soon as we saw her, it was love at first sight. Now Sasha is 3 1/2 years old. She blends in with our purple wall, that’s why we call her “Sasha star ninja” – also because she has a star on her butt when she lifts her tail up. Her favorite thing to do is hunt rabbits and other small intruders, aka small vermin. She is the best watch doggy and a awesome cuddlier.

Senior corgi adopted: from skin infections to playing in 1 acre yard every day
We weren’t looking for a second dog, not really…I just happened to be browsing the HSHV adoption listings (again, for no reason at all). We lived in a 900 foot duplex with no fenced yard in Ann Arbor about a year ago, when I saw Aries listed for adoption on the site. We were going to wait to get a second dog until we bought a house. But as soon as I saw the listing that morning, I immediately called up HSHV and put her on hold. Still working from home during the pandemic, I told my boss that I

Best Birthday Gift
About four years ago, my family had to put down my dog. It was the most heartbreaking day. We didn’t think we’d ever find another pet. A year later, I was scrolling on Facebook and saw that HSHV was doing a Love Train. Just to mess with my parents, I started sending them pictures of the Border Collie-like dogs. Well, I sent my dad a picture of Jax and he fell in love immediately. He went to HSHV to get a number early and we walked back to meet Jax. He was in the back of his crate, trembling and

Our first fur baby!
My fiancé and myself had just moved in together and we knew it was time to get a fur baby to love! We walked into the first room and all the other cats slept as we walked around. As soon as I saw Bree, I knew we had to have her. She perked right up and let us pet her (once she was done eating of course). From that moment on, she has been the best! We worked through some biting and scratching in the beginning and now Bree loves belly scratches, getting under all the blankets, and to rub

The most wonderful gift for a mourning heart
In 2020 we lost our beloved cat Bublik. Bublik was abandoned at a gas station back in 2016 (not in the U.S.). Fortunately a lovely lady at a nearby coffee shop looked after him, posted about him on FB and that’s how we found him. He was the loveliest and friendliest cat we had ever seen. An absolute joy. He came with us to Ann Arbor when we moved here in 2018. Everything was so much happier with Bublik. But at the very beginning of 2020 he got sick and was diagnosed with an inoperable kind of cancer. We were

Nala finds her furever home!!
When I walked into HSHV I was looking for a best friend and companion. I saw Porsche, now Nala, and absolutely fell in love with her. She was relaxed and so sweet. I took her on a walk and gave her some kisses and knew she was the girl for me! She has turned into such a beautiful butterfly since coming to her new home! She is such a smiley, loving girl. She loves walks, squeaky toys and shadows. This girl has lit up my family’s life more than I could ever explain. It’s hard to say who rescued who!

Butters Falls in Love 🍁
I had been wanting to adopt another dog a few months after adopting our first boy from HSHV, but my boyfriend and I agreed we’d wait 2 years before doing so…unless by some far-fetched chance a dog came through who looked identical to our current dog, Benji. We knew this was a stretch, but I was determined to add another to our family sooner so I made sure to keep up with HSHV’s Facebook page. I saw it was HSHV’s 10th anniversary of being in their new facility, and they put out this wonderful video of the pets they’ve helped

Benji sails away with his forever family
My boyfriend and I had been talking about getting a dog for a while, so one day we decided to go to HSHV to visit with the animals. I was specifically looking for long haired, fluffy, medium sized, female dog… and then we saw Benji (formerly Sudo)! We had never seen a dog with his coloring and thought he was absolutely stunning (and very, very sweet too). Dogs really do pick their humans, because we immediately knew he was the one for us. Fast-forward 2 years: our Benji is just the cuddliest, goofiest boy and we’re so glad he found

Ruse and Mari!
We adopted Ruse from HSHV in December 2019 after losing our cat Ginny (also adopted from HSHV) to acute kidney disease in November. Ruse was right at home very quickly and the perfect addition to our home. In February 2020, I saw Mari pop up on HSHV’s page, and her story made me so sad. She had lived in a shelter for 7 years – her entire life – and had just been moved to HSHV in hopes that she would be adopted. Our son was 7 at the time, so I kept saying “Seven years! That’s his whole life!”
