Dogs have a 3-second rule, too!

Most dogs enjoy petting, but even the cuddliest dog has times when simply not in the mood!  Prolonged touching can be overstimulating to some dogs, and can make others uncomfortable or stressed.  When dogs don’t feel able to move away – which they may not when in physical contact with us – they may resort to telling us to back off in less desirable ways. Give dogs a way of “opting in” to social contact by using the “3-second rule” of petting.  Pet for no more than three seconds, then stop.  Does the dog nudge you or move into

Ann Arbor, MI (September 1, 2020) — Following a tip from concerned sources that animals weren’t being properly cared for, Animal Cruelty Investigators from the Humane Society of Huron Valley (HSHV) executed a search warrant and seized 14 cats and 31 dogs from a Pittsfield Township residence Friday afternoon. Mocha’s Happily Ever After

This was my first experience adopting a dog from a shelter. I’ve always seen these stories on TV and social media where the process is romanticized, and how “you just know” when you see them. We went specifically to look at Mocha, a dog we had seen posted on Instagram (my husband’s dream dog is a chocolate lab). When we entered the dog area, I heard this incessant, continuous barking. I muttered something to my husband that it was probably her, and I was right. There she was, barking nonstop, refusing to make eye-contact with anyone walking by, and refusing

Sidd comes Home

After my Buddy Holly passed on, I felt Peggy Sue needed another cat companion. Now this was in the old building. As I walked down the tiled hallway to the cat area, I heard a cat meowing quite loudly out a side door. Here was this orange tabby in a small cage. We started a “conversation.” It turns out he was a five-year-old who had just come in. So I waited the requisite days. I brought him home, but it took him some time to get adjusted to Peggy Sue, and he would freak out seeing other cats in my

Senior siblings find new home

I was looking for some new animal companions and came across Shadow and Princess (14 years old) while looking through the available cats online at HSHV. I just fell in love with the way that they looked and knew I had to meet them in person. Once I did, I knew right away that I would have to be the one to take these beauties home. These guys have filled my life with love and companionship since the day that they came home. Shadow loves to cuddle within the minute you sit down, and Princess will jump up to scare

My Sweet Baby

We went to HSHV to find a cat a year after our Baby died. We went into the common room and saw a post for a calico female. We looked around and this mostly white kitty, with a few spots and and orange tail wandered out. My husband asked, “Are you a calico kitty?” She ran up to him and head bumped – still to this day does the same – and that was it. She was two. Chey is 13 now. Still head bumps and sleeps on my head   Casey Cheyanne now Cheyanne

A fantastic Love Story for Hazel

My husband and I wanted a sibling for our beautiful boy Bentley, a Lab mix. We were looking at many rescues and had a disappointing experience with another rescue until we found the Humane Society of Huron Valley’s Love Train! I was working, so my husband attended alone. He fell in love with Paxil, and we brought her home. She needed a new name, and we decided on Hazel. She is a very happy, funny, kooky and energetic girl, and she completes our home! Thank you so much for rescuing our girl so that she can be a part of

Setting Yourself up for a successful trapping: Pre-scouting an area

August 10, 2020 – Before you begin trapping in a new area, a great way to set yourself up for success is to do some pre-scouting to understand the environment in which the community cats you are helping live, and to create a trapping plan. Pre-scouting can help get a better sense of how many cats are actually in an area. As we all know, estimating the number of cats around is always difficult, and often people asking for help don’t have a true sense of the scale of their community. This also gives the cats in the area a
