My boyfriend and I adopted Peter, a black Lab and Greyhound mix, in the fall of 2017. Peter had already been through three owners at one year old and kept getting returned to the shelter because he was “too energetic.” We thought that Peter would be a perfect match for our very active lifestyle, and we were right. We’ve had Peter for almost a year now, and he is the biggest baby on the planet who loves trips to the dog park, runs through the park, peanut butter snacks, and LOTS of belly rubs! Peter’s big news is that he

11 years ago, found my best friends with you
My childhood cat, Sugar, passed away when I was 10. He was an absolute angel, and very close to having been a nanny to me! I was devastated; I still am when I think about it. But that August, HSHV was having a 2-for-1 adoption special on kittens. We checked out various fostered kittens, and eventually fell in love with and adopted Coco and Luna, who were rescued from a hoarding situation when they were wee kittens. Luna has stayed a petite 7 lbs and is constantly glued to me, while Coco has always had anxiety issues and eats her

Callie, our newest furbaby
We lost our Indiana in October due to cancer. We had 11 1/2 years with her. Heartbroken wasn’t even the word. We adopted a puppy soon after, but we knew we wanted a sibling for our newest furbaby — not to replace our Indy but to help us heal and allow our family to grow. We saw Callie’s picture on the Love Train announcement, and we knew we needed her to be part of our family. She is now nearly 8 months old and has claimed us as her own. She is a stubborn fluff ball who loves to hug

Finn finds a forever home!
I adopted Finn in October of 2017 from the Love Train (Tennessee trip). We did puppy training classes shortly thereafter at HSHV. His ears now stick up straight, and everyone thinks he is the cutest thing ever. Not many people have seen a Viszla-Rat Terrier mix before. I am so happy to have him in my life. Flay now Finn

Little Man, Big Heart
I adopted Little Man almost exactly a year ago. I was missing having an animal companion in my life. I knew I wanted to adopt an older animal to give them the best of the last. I’m so happy Little Man found a place in my life and home. He’s almost 14 years old but sometimes has spurts of energy. Mostly he just likes to nap and cuddle. Thank you, HSHV, for bringing Little Man to me. Little Man

Chloe rules the boys
We adopted Chloe in Sept of 2017 to join our family. We had a male Yorkie and a male Olde English Bulldogge at the time. We felt like we needed another girl in the family. And, our puppy Bulldog needed someone to play with as our Yorkie was 9 and no longer interested in playing. Chloe fit right in and now she thinks she owns the house! We love her to pieces!! Best buds forever!
We were lucky enough to adopt L’Bo about 5 months ago from HSHV. Our wild child is by far the best thing that happened, and I can’t imagine my life without him. I sustained a brain injury a few years ago, and my life was dramatically changed. He brought the life back into my life, helped me find my purpose, and became my best friend. My husband and I are over the moon with him, and we will forever be grateful to HSHV. Thank you! -Derek and Chris Buddy now L’ No McRoni Berghuis

Roo chooses his forever family
We had taken in a stray kitten and named him Otis. It was clear right away that Otis needed a playmate. When we went to HSHV “just to look around,” there were so many kittens, but one kept coming up to the door and wanting our attention. When I held him, he immediately rubbed my face with his and began the loudest purring. He was choosing us. I was his human. We were family, and he was coming home. It’s been two years since then, and we can’t imagine our family without him. French Fry now Roo

Storm’s new haircut
We adopted Storm (formerly Sugar) a few months ago. She was so timid and scared. She had been shaved all the way down due to matting and skin allergies. This was her first haircut by a groomer since we adopted her. Sugar now Storm
