Potbellied pig housed at Humane Society of Huron Valley and seeking ownerAnn Arbor, MI (August 12, 2024)— The Humane Society of Huron Valley (HSHV) is currently housing an unusual guest in an even more unusual location. Due to an overwhelming number of animals at HSHV, including a few farm animals, the organization has temporarily converted one of its dog play yards into a cozy home for a friendly potbellied pig.

The pig was discovered in a field at Meadowlark Equestrian Center. HSHV is currently searching for the owner. If no one steps forward in the next few days, the pig, whom HSHV has given the affectionate name “Cucumber,” will be put up for adoption. In the meantime, staff describe Cucumber as friendly and “happy enough to just wander around the play yard and check things out.”

Tanya Hilgendorf, CEO of HSHV, emphasizes the organization’s commitment to all animals, large and small.

“Like dogs and cats, pigs are sentient. And really all farm animals hold a special place in our hearts,” Hilgendorf said. “Over our 125+ years of service, we’ve seen and helped many different kinds of animals. Whether animals are in need of rescue or just a safe place to temporarily stay, we’re here for them. This pig is no exception, and we’re happy to provide him with the care he needs while we find his owner.”

As the organization attends to the more than 500 animals currently in their care, they are also asking the community for assistance. Adopters, donors, and foster parents are needed now more than ever to help HSHV continue providing top-notch care for all the animals who come through their doors.
